College

A misconception held by many is that they would never be able to go or send their children to college. This is wrong. Everyone SHOULD be able to go to college. I realize that college is expensive, but it also has to do with where you want to go. Another mistaken belief leads some to think that they must go straight to a university for their schooling. This is wrong. Junior and community colleges provide a good environment for the first two years. The education is just as good — and can exceed — that offered at many universities. Look to these schools to cut down costs. Check out my page that is directed to these schools for much more information.

Scholarships and Grants

Be sure to apply for every scholarship that is applicable. This often takes a long time and can start to become frustrating. It is well worth it once you get into a college. Look into federal grants that are offered every year. These are awarded on the basis of your income, expenses and taxes. These grants are also based on the school that you are attending. You receive a certain amount toward each semester of college. Be sure to check out my page that has many links and additional information regarding scholarships and grants.

Working

One of the next best things to do while you are attending college whether it is a university or a junior college is to maintain a job. You do not have to have a full-time job while in school. Full-time may become stressful, especially when you are starting out. But you may want to look at getting a part-time job, so you will have a steady flow of income.

Investing

Some of the best information I can give to anyone that may be looking at college is to start an investment program while you are young. If you are looking at college funds for your children when they graduate high school, this is some useful information for you as well. For the younger generations, nowadays INVESTING is the future. It is looking like there may be no Social Security left for the younger ones. You need to educate yourself about investing while you are young. The longer you wait, the more you will have to put back every month to accrue.

Be Smart

If you are an incoming or current college student Do Not Be Stupid when it comes to spending. I know that while you are attending school, there are certain expenses that you can’t go without — such as books, supplies, food, occasional dates and computer. My point is to not go overboard. Don’t go out to eat every night of the week. Set up certain nights that you go out. The biggest thing is to keep a budget. I can’t stress that enough. You need to keep track of how much money you are spending and-or charging. Try not to do the latter (charging) as much as possible. Just because you have a credit card that has a few thousand dollars in credit does NOT mean that you have that much money. It means that you MAY spend up to that amount but however much you spend on it will have to be paid back with INTEREST. Make sure to pay attention to those interest rates as well. Much more useful information on this under my links.
